A unique new community store in Axminster will give second-hand children’s toys a second chance.

No Toy Left Behind, which is due to open at the city’s Pippins Community Center next Thursday (February 25), will be selling lovingly restored second-hand toys.

And he’s planning special events for the opening, including storytelling, recycling activities and more.

Launched by a successful crowdfunding campaign, the non-profit environmental initiative aims to reduce waste by saving toys from landfill and encouraging the local community to buy used rather than new.

The launch event runs from 1 to 4 p.m., with the official grand opening at 1:15 p.m.

In addition, there will be a story hour with local environmental children’s author Emily Hobson-Martin, a screening of the short environmental animation The Story of Stuff, a fun recycling art project and an update of East Devon District Council climate change manager Catherine Causley on Net-Zero Devon.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, toy production is “the most plastic-intensive industry in the world”, with around 90% of all toys made from plastic.

And No Toy Left Behind founder and environmental activist Beth Steele said the shop aims to show how buying used toys can help reduce that environmental impact – and also help save money. to families.

“After spending several months painstakingly cleaning and refurbishing over 20 wheelie bins containing donated toys, we are thrilled to finally open our store to the community,” she said.

“No Toy Left Behind aims to help the planet by reducing waste and manufacturing demand.

“We hope to demonstrate that we don’t need to buy new and get our community thinking about the environmental impact of their purchasing choices.”

No Toy Left Behind opens at the Pippins Community Center in Axminster. The shop will be run entirely by volunteers and open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
