Pair buys all the contents of a toy store to give to families in need of gifts this Christmas

A business owner and his partner bought all the contents of a toy store to give to families in need of gifts this Christmas.Ryan Powell bought all the toys left at D. Emlyn Lloyd in Ystrad Mynach, South Wales, for families in need after the announcement of the closure of non-essential retailers. He and his business partner Paul Jones decided to spend the money helping the beleaguered parents, many of whom were waiting for their last paycheck to buy Christmas presents to see virtually every store closed.Ryan said: “I am an employer, we employ around 80 people.“I know a lot of people depend on their last pay before Christmas to do their shopping.“I know there are people waiting for their universal credit and their last pay who I think will struggle.“My wife and I were thinking about what we could do to help when we saw D. Emlyn Lloyd’s message that they had plenty of toys left to sell.“I got in touch with them and told them I would buy them all.”

The Pontypridd businessman, owner of Brecongate Projects’ commercial construction services, arranged to purchase the toys at cost, with the store making no profit from the sale before sharing a Facebook post urging families in need to contact him.He said the result was thousands of shares and hundreds of posts within minutes of the post going live.“I was trying to read the whole post to figure out who could get what, I was doing it with a knot in my throat and tears in my eyes knowing the struggle people have been going through this year,” he added.“I just wish I had done it earlier. The response I got was nothing like what I expected.“The people who messaged me were waiting for their final pay and benefits.“There are single parents who didn’t want to take the risk of taking their kids shopping.I’m just sorry I didn’t start this sooner. “

The purchase of around 80 toys has helped 25 families and around 70 children and Ryan is looking to see if there is anything else he can do to help. Her friend Margaret Rees also helps organize gift delivery as well as shopping to pick up a few extra items for families in need.“I am overwhelmed by the answer. It is heartbreaking because of what people are going through.”
